The End Of The Mayan Calendar

First off, let me say this: there is nothing in the astrology of this date that suggests the world will end.

So what does it all mean?

The horoscope on this date of the winter solstice is interesting and emphasizes spirituality, however, there will be circumstances during the year to trigger our need for spiritual growth, especially around June 26th, and November 13th. We will feel the need for a deeper understanding because there will be so much confusion and tension in the world. Although we’ve already begun the trend towards greater consciousness, it actually intensifies after February when Neptune moves into the sign of Pisces and spends the next 14 years working through its lessons.

There has been much talk about the sun transiting into the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, known as the Galactic Centre or Galactic Equator. This area of the sky was referred to by Mayans as the “Sacred Tree” and although it certainly sounds important, two details must be mentioned to be this into better context.

The first is that from an astronomical perspective, the Sun is not actually in the galactic plane, nor is it passing through it; it just appears that way from our perspective on earth. And the Sun ‘appears’ to align with the galactic plane twice a year, every year; when at 0 degrees cancer (the summer solstice) and at 0 degrees Capricorn (the winter solstice). The centre or equator point is believed to be approximately 27 degrees Sagittarius to 0 degrees Capricorn.

Secondly, the closest approach of the Sun’s intersection on the ecliptic (the Sun’s path) with the galactic equator was on the winter solstice of December 22nd, 1998. The sun was only 0.30 arc minutes (0.005°) off the equator and that is when it appeared to be at its closest point to the galactic centre.  If we return to the theory that the apparent alignment of the Sun to the galactic centre suggests a global transformation in consciousness, I would suggest that this process actually began in 1998 and is gradually reaching more and more of the world’s population.

Due to the width of the Sun, crossing the galactic equator will take 36 years in total, as stated by John Major Jenkins. The Galactic Alignment “zone” is 18 years prior and 18 years after the Sun’s point of closest contact in 1998. Thus the “Era” of 2012 is 1980 – 2016.

If you look at the aural, written or carved history of the Maya, their cosmological thinking also suggests that they were more interested in changes spanning a large period of time than one single date.

So why did the Mayan’s choose Dec 21 2012 as an end date of one calendar and the beginning of the next?

They calculated and followed solstice dates, and perhaps like us, saw them as endings of one cycle and beginnings of another. Perhaps the appearance of the Sun rising into the galactic centre was symbolic of rebirth or even held local religious significance.

According to Astronomer Philip Plait, the Mayan calendar does not end in 2012 at all. He compares it to the odometer of a car; as each section of the odometer reaches 9, it then clicks over to 0 and starts a new cycle.

Secondly, Mayan mythology gave the planet Venus unique importance and on June 6th, rare Venus-Sun conjunction occurs. Perhaps this was reason enough to end their calendar in 2012.

From a numerological perspective, this data suggests that our memory is being re-awakened to who we really are, at our soul level, during this time of spiritual intensification on earth.  It suggests that we are on the verge of a quantum leap in our evolution, and even new age.  This may well be; astrology does not dispute it.  And, related to this; I believe we’ve begun the slow transition into the Age of Aquarius.

Apart from astrology, I feel that the world is indeed in a cosmic shift of consciousness where our spiritual values are becoming stronger and we’re reconnecting more to our soul’s mission and to our humanity.  It’s helping us to move; one person at a time, away from negativity, hopelessness and being stuck in materiality. Relying only upon a rational or empirical worldview doesn’t seem to work anymore.  Intuitive understanding is growing stronger, shifting into a lighter, higher perspective.

It’s clear to see that structures and systems, especially in business, banking and government no longer serve our evolution and are becoming gradually more exposed, thanks to Pluto’s arrival into Capricorn in 2008. Though this transformation will occur over a long period of time, it’s speeding up exponentially as seen with certain planetary alignments. For example, Neptune has not been in Pisces since the time of the gold rush of 1848. Precious metals, oil and water too, will become scarce resources over the next 14 years. Many elements of the environment are at a breaking point, due to the chemical pollution of oceans, the radioactive damage done to our air and soil, and the genetic modification of our plants and foods.

We’re certainly on the brink of collapse in many global systems, and in the way of life, we know.  The Dec 21st date is not a more significant date than any other winter solstice, it just represents one point in a lengthy transition period. The unravelling of our beliefs about the world is a symbol, heralding the dawn of a new era.  And just as with any major change, our awareness of truth will guide us smoothly through the experience.
